Civil Rights Movement & Policies

The course is centered on the political and social evolution of civil rights in the United States. We will discuss their philosophical and historical background and development from the 19th through the 21th century, including the period of the 1954-1965 Civil Rights movement. This includes reflections and analyses of the meanings of core concepts like race, class, and gender, as well as a review of civil rights politics and policies in the nation and the world.

Students are provided with a selection of theoretical texts and other materials, but are required to find some source materials of their own in order to finish the class with a brief research paper of their own.

This course fulfills the Baccalaureate Core requirement for the Perspectives, Difference, Power & Discrimination.
