Abstract: History is not merely a simple order of events. As historiography, it is also a specific narration, and an explanation of how and why events happened. The history of Europe can be seen as history of traumatic breaks; but also of continuities. This presentation provides an outline of European history since antiquity, focussing on larger trends and continuities.

Abstract: Human beings organize themselves into communities with a common identity that is not given but constructed. These communities may or may not agree to join into larger constructs. This presentation offers an outline of some theories of the state and some examples of (con)federation preceding the EU.

Abstract: EU Integration has happened in the aftermath of World War II, and in the shadow of the Cold War. It has furthermore been accompanied with the transformation of European-controlled global empires. This presentation provides a cursory overview of these events.

Abstract: The EU is not the only institution bringing about European integration. It is the preliminary result of a long process, and is embedded into a web of other structures. This presentation shall provide a brief overview of such structures and of the historical development of the European Union.

Abstract: America, Europe and Africa share a long and complex history. This trans-Atlantic bond has created a community divided by an ocean, united oftentimes by common values and responsibilities. This presentations shall provide a brief overview of that history.
